90% of Eastern Ukrainians are Ethnic Russians and loved being Ukraine citizens but were being slaughtered by Ukrainian military for 8 years, 14,000 citizens. They needed and wanted someone to help them.
It did not help that the EU could not stop talking about having Ukraine join NATO, which the US and EU agreed they would never do. That was unacceptable to Russia.
